International Geographical Union's Commission of Geographical Education's Conference - June 2026
We are delighted to welcome delegates to Bangkok for the 2026 Conference of the International Geographical Union’s Commission on Geographical Education, hosted at the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University. Under the theme “Educating for Sustainability: Integrating Geographical and Interdisciplinary Knowledge, Practice and Innovation,” the conference aims to create a vibrant international forum for dialogue, collaboration, and critical reflection on the role of geography education in addressing pressing global and local sustainability challenges.
The conference highlights geography’s unique capacity to connect environmental, social, economic, and cultural perspectives, and to bridge disciplinary boundaries in meaningful and transformative ways. It invites educators, researchers, and practitioners to explore innovative pedagogies, curriculum approaches, digital and field-based practices, and research-informed initiatives that support learners in understanding complexity, interdependence, and responsibility in a rapidly changing world.
Situated in Southeast Asia, a region marked by dynamic socio-environmental transformations, the conference provides a powerful context for examining sustainability education through place-based, comparative, and globally connected lenses. Through scholarly exchange, collaborative learning, and shared experiences—including the pre-conference field trip to Bang Krachao—the conference seeks to inspire forward-looking geographical education that empowers learners and educators to contribute to more just, resilient, and sustainable futures.
We invite submissions that engage with comparative perspectives, innovative pedagogies, and sustainable educational practices across all levels of education, including early childhood, primary, secondary, tertiary, and teacher education. Contributions are encouraged from diverse geographical, cultural, and educational contexts, reflecting the global scope of geographical and environmental education.
The conference welcomes research papers, practice-based studies, conceptual contributions, and collaborative initiatives that advance transformative approaches to geographical education. We particularly encourage submissions that explore the integration of geographical and interdisciplinary knowledge, fieldwork and place-based learning, digital and technological innovation, and education for sustainability.
Submissions should critically examine how geographical and environmental education can support learners, teachers, and teacher educators in understanding and responding to a world characterised by rapid change, complexity, risk, and vulnerability. We seek contributions that illuminate how education can foster informed, ethical, and responsible citizenship, empowering individuals and communities to imagine and work towards more just, resilient, and sustainable futures.
The programme will be finalised once the abstracts submitted for poster and academic paper presentations have been reviewed.
